I was never really interested in athletics or organizations in which you had to earn your place, but if there is one thing I devote myself to it is community service. There is always an organization or a family around a community in need of help whether it be raking leaves or serving a meal. Community service also opens doors to travelling around the world to experience other communities in need. I was fortunate enough to open up my mind and heart to reach out to others in Cook, Wisconsin.
The summer before I entered high school I volunteered to travel with my church to Cook, Wisconsin to complete mission work. I wasn't sure what I was in for, but I had my best friend by my side and knew it would be an unforgettable experience. As we boarded the bus, all I could think of is how I had never been away from my parents for this long. When we arrived at the camp we would be staying at I realized I needed to put my needs aside in order to help others.
Throughout the week we helped at numerous churches, food pantries, thrift stores, and recreational areas. Although it was hard work I knew it would pay off. By the end of the week I had a new understanding for patience and a deeper appreciation of what I was so fortunate to have. I returned home with ideas of how I could become more involved in my community and help others locally.
This experience set out my path for high school and for the rest of my life. I learned a new way to feel good about myself and a look at how other communities live. I believe this experience is and will continue to help me through my years at Iowa State by being more aware of the struggles of others and becoming more involved throughout college.
Mary- seems like this experience really helped you become more aware of yourself and other communities and people-- that's wonderful! I look forward to reading your next post. --Allie

ReplyDeleteGood community service backgrounds are always helpful. While all of my service came through organizations like 4-H and FFA I still learned more about myself while doing it and had a sense of accomplishment.
